Riverfront Management Plan might see revival

A revival of the Talkeetna Riverfront Management Plan may change the face of the Talkeetna River at the end of Main Street.

Chad Valentine, Billy Fitzgerald, Ruth Wood and 7 other community members labored for years over developing a plan for the riverfront. The Plan was accepted by the Borough — and the Alaska Railroad — in 2004.  According to Billy Fitzgerald, by the time the plan was finally accepted, people had run out of steam and no volunteers stepped up to carry the torch and fulfill the vision. The Plan has never been carried out.

One of the after-effects of the Moose Dropping Festival is the possibility that new energy will start to move the Riverfront plan forward. 

A half hour discussion took place at Monday evening’s Talkeetna Community Council meeting on enacting the Riverfront Plan.  Chamber of Commerce President Trisha Costello and council vice president Billy Fitzgerald will be meeting this month to brainstorm on the various contacts needed in order to set the plan in motion. 

The Riverfront Plan will go on the council’s September 7^th agenda. The plan involves designated camping spots, day use areas with picnic spots as well as fishing areas.
