School Board budget vote to impact school principals

Wednesday – The Mat Su School District meets tonight in a special meeting to decide the 2010 budget.

That vote will affect an on-going dispute in the Talkeetna and Trapper Creek schools over elementary principals. Several years ago, a decision was made, all based on cost, according to Superintendent George Troxel, to combine the principals of Trapper Creek and Talkeetna into one position.

Troxel says that several factors have entered the current discussion of principals. He said the school board’s decision tonight will most likely make the decision on how the funds are spent in Talkeetna and Trapper Creek AND if each school will get a ½ time principal or if the district will continue to fund one principal for both schools as they have done for the past 4 or 5 years.

Troxel said if the board does not approve the budget tonight, the deliberations will continue. The deadline for budget approval is June 30th.
