Former Senator Ted Stevens has been killed in a plane crash near Dillingham, according to a source close to the family.  Mitch Rose is the Senator’s former chief of staff and press secretary and is speaking on the family’s behalf.

He confirmed that Stevens was on the DeHavilland Otter that went down near Aleknagik last night.

Officials say nine people were on board and 5 were killed.  Rose says the Stevens family will release a statement a little later today.

Stevens was the U.S. Senate’s longest serving Republican and served Alaska for four decades before losing reelection in 2008.
