The Alaska Department of Public Safety is extending the deadline to change over from studded tires from May 1st to May 15th.
In a statement issued Monday morning, the department says the extension is the result of an extended period of winter weather in much of the state. In the statement, DPS Commissioner James Cockrell says “This 15-day extension for the studded tire removal deadline will provide additional time to switch to regular tires without compromising safety.”
The extension applies to areas north of sixty-degrees latitude. The line crosses just south of Seward. In areas south of sixty degrees, studded tires must be removed by April 15th.
