The Su Valley Rams girls basketball team made it to the state finals game for the first time ever and came within a few points of bringing home the championship.
On Thursday, the girls stated off against Unalakleet, who coach Jimmy Sickler had said had potential to win the whole tournament. The Rams came out on top by a score of 36 to 24. The semi-final game was against Chevak, who had beaten Tok in the first round. Su Valley won that game in convincing fason with a final score of 55 to 23.
As word spread in the Northern Valley that the girls were headed to the finals, the limited number of tickets available for fans sold out quickly. When it came time for the final game, the Rams kept it close, but ultimately lost to Hooper Bay by a score of 36 to 32.
Only one Su Valley player, Kenna Grenier, is a senior, so its possible that most of the team could return next season to try again.
The Su Valley boys also qualified for the state tournament, but struggled against very strong teams. They lost their first game to Hooper Bay on Thursday, then lost in the consolation bracket to Unalakleet on Friday.
