Su Valley skiers met the school district competition at the Borough Championships on Valentine’s Day. The 8.4 K classic race was held at the base of Hatcher Pass. Terrain was extremely challenging, containing a long 2-K uphill climb and steep downhill run with sharp turns. Skiers skied the course twice.
Su Valley didn’t field a men’s team due to illnesses, but skiers who participated skied well. Leading the team was Ian Mannix, who came in third, missing second place by 3 seconds. He kept pace with the winner, Duney Strickland, in a tight and exciting exchange of places throughout the race. Tyler Figley came in 22nd in a field of 45 skiers, having a solid race. He was followed by teammate Gus Shoulders, who placed 42nd.
Su Valley’s lone girl, Morgan Michels, skied to 13th place out of 42 girls. Although she didn’t crack the top 10, she skied a strong race and was the first freshman girl to finish.
The Ski team heads to region championships next weekend.
