Summer road construction approaches, some delays expected when headed south

The Alaska Department of Transportation has a handful of resurfacing projects lined up for the Parks Highway this summer, but Travel between the Matanuska Valley or Anchorage area and the Upper Susitna Valley will be moderately impacted.
Rick Feller, spokesman for the Alaska D-O-T, says the biggest project scheduled for the Parks Highway this summer will take place between Big Lake and Houston, where asphalt resurfacing will reduce traffic to one lane. The work will be done primarily at night, and Feller says motorists can expect some delays.

One project that could go to bid in June is an upgrade to the Parks Highway at Mile 80 to 93, where the weight restrictions will be eliminated. Feller says this project has not yet been added to the calendar, and most of the work would likely take place next year. He added that if preliminary work gets under way this summer, it likely wouldn’t have a significant impact on area motorist.
