A popular fishing spot at Sunshine Creek near Talkeetna will become a day-use and camping area beginning this summer. The Sunshine Creek Day Use Area and Campground was originally constructed in 2021, but never opened.
Mat-Su Borough Outdoor Recreation Specialist Brian Robison says the campground began with funding from the CARES Act. There is now an expanded day-use parking area with pit toilets and 16 primitive campsites for tent campers, trucks, and small RVs.
With the salmon closures in the last few years, Robison says the site has been fairly quiet. But, the site offers access to Sunshine Creek and overlooks the entire drainage area.
Day-use parking is five dollars, campsites are 20 dollars and Borough Parks annual passes are acceptable for day-use parking. The campground is expected to be open by Memorial Day weekend.
