The sudden death of Mat Su School Superintendant, Dr. Kenneth Burnley shocked family, friends, school administrators, school board members this weekend.
Burnley died on Saturday morning after complications from knee surgery.
He had double knee surgery on Wednesday and was reported feeling well after surgery. By Friday afternoon his wife had reported he wasn’t feeling good and Saturday morning the news of his sudden death had spread to school board members and administrators.
Burnley was at the Fairbanks School District and the Colorado Springs district for 24 years. Burnley was hired July 1st of last year to fill the position left open by retiring superintendent George Troxel.
Delegation of duty was extended to Deena Paramo after his death. Dr. Burnley had transferred authority to Paramo before surgery that would continue to July 5th. The extension of duty will continue until action by the Mat Su school board.
There is a memorial planned at Teeland Middle School in Wasilla for Friday at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been established at the University of Michigan. Contributions to the memorial fund can be made at any Wells Fargo bank.
