We have had another amazing auction week!

Here is our final dessert:

Friday 8:00-8:55pm

Up next we present the Siren’s Chocolate Cake with a Raspberry Twist! This cake is created by Ruth Wood and here is what she has to say about it and this auction:

“This cake starts with a recipe from an old Southern cookbook that describes it thus: ‘Strong men melt, weak men feel like Atlas when confronted with this.’ Not only is that statement politically incorrect, but it’s flat wrong. Be you man or woman, just one bite of Siren’s cake and you will swoon into your Valentine’s arms. The cake itself is a rich concoction of chocolate, sugar, and butter combined with other traditional cake ingredients. The cake, however, is only the base for the chocolate icing— more chocolate, sugar, and butter. But, what about the twist in the title? This year, I am switching from my quest to deliver the perfect match of chocolate and lemon because I think I nailed it last year. For now, it is a surprise, But I’ll announce the filling before the auction. I am aiming for delicious, and if I think it is, I may have to bid on it myself. Bid once, bid twice, bid three times. I bake this to support KTNA because our radio is tuned into 88.9 FM every day. But, I also serve on the board of the Upper Susitna Food Pantry, and we are honored for the additional funds that will come our way with bids over $75, thanks to the generosity of the Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union, Jessica Stevens Community Foundation, Talkeetna Air Taxi, and Mountain High Pizza High. What a fantastic community we have!

Today we begin our auction with a classic dessert, and a bit of a history lesson! Chocolate was discovered in Mesoamerica around 450BC and the seeds were used in fermented drinks and were valued so much, they were also a form of currency. It wasn’t until 1764 that a Dutch man discovered he could grind the seeds and add to cake batter making the first Chocolate Cake. Add in the invention of ganache about 100 years later and you have the ultimate Decadent Dessert, Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ganache and MORE Dark Chocolate Ganache Poured over it then topped with fresh strawberries!

This afternoon’s decadent dessert is a marriage made in heaven. The Chocolate Guinness Cake is from a delicious recipe by celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, and baked by celebrity KTNA morning newsreader Maureen Gualtieri. Unadorned, the cake visually conjures the simple elegance of a perfect pint of Guinness: a rich dark body with a soft creamy head. In addition to the Guinness stout, the chocolate cake includes more than two sticks of butter, cocoa powder, pure vanilla, and sour cream. The cream cheese frosting is guaranteed to be the best you’ve ever eaten — a magical ratio of cream cheese, heavy cream, and powdered sugar.

The cake is partnered with a sassy, sweet pint of Homemade Vanilla Fudge Swirl Ice Cream, crafted by Doug Gualtieri. Rich heavy cream, a heavy hand of homemade vanilla, with a rich fudge swirl. A perfect pairing!

Happy Valentines Day!

This year, Anita has made a Mexican Chocolate Truffle Cake topped with Creamy Chocolate Truffles and here is what she has to say about it:

“Our very popular flourless chocolate truffle cake with simple, natural ingredients: butter, eggs and high quality chocolate. This time it will warm you up with a kick thanks to those flavors we all love that come from our neighbors to the south. Folded into the rich, creamy, intense chocolate flavor is fresh jalapeno simple syrup, cinnamon, and a touch of chili and cayenne. Not spicy, but perfect for this chilly weather. It’s decorated with glossy poured ganache icing, cinnamon whipped cream and candied jalapenos. Naturally gluten free, this is one of the most decadent chocolate cakes ever – a little goes a long way, it will serve 2-8 people. We went “bachelor style” this year and have a whole Valentine’s package including the elegant truffle cake, a beautiful bouquet of flowers donated by Ember at Talkeetna Flowers and two decks of 52 ways to spice up your relationship cards (or have fun making fun of the decks of cards)!”
