Susitna Closed to King Fishing

After weak runs, the King Salmon sport fishing has been closed on the Susitna river  and its tributaries for the remainder of the season, starting on Monday, June 25th.

The Susitna river joins a list of rivers where closures have already been put in place, including the Kenai, Copper, Yukon.

Area Sport Fishing Biologist Sam Ivey says the department of Fish and Game had hoped this year’s returns would be better than they have so far proven to be
Ivey said that after closures on the Little Susitna and Cook Inlet last week due to low runs, they left the upper susitna open only to catch and release fishing. But there hadn’t been an increase in numbers farther inland, and fish and game decided to close the rivers to fishing for kings for the season.

Though the fishery is closed, Fish and Game will continue to monitor the runs, and Ivey says there is slim chance that the fishery would re-open.
