The Susitna Community Council held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening and made a step forward with land planning efforts. The council voted in June to send a letter to the Mat Su Borough asking assistance in starting the Special Use District planning process.
A letter was received back from Assembly representative Tom Kluberton stating that the Borough is currently entrenched in revising Title 17, the borough land use document, and no help should be expected until those revisions are complete.
Area resident Richard Bergener asked that a planning committee of some type be started anyway due to the various planning issues that have arisen in the Susitna Council area. There was discussion on land use and problems with water bodies and fish habitat concerns by those in attendance.
The Council, meanwhile, unanimously approved to write a letter to the Borough asking them to keep Borough owned land in the Council area under ‘Public Recreation and Habitat Classification’ in their Natural Resource Management Plan.
The meeting, held at Sheep Creek Lodge, brought in a dozen or so attendees who live in the Caswell area. Informal discussion after the meeting continued on with concerns about fish habitat, homes next to water bodies and Borough road building efforts in the area.
A Susitna Council land planning committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for August 20th at the Su Valley High School.
