Susitna council seeks project ideas

A special grant expenditure committee of the Susitna Community Council took public input last week from residents on how to spend state revenue share funds.

The State of Alaska allocates approximately 20,000 dollars per fiscal year to community councils. The money has to be spent on projects that benefit the public.

Among the ideas submitted to the Susitna Council’s grant expenditure committee was the creation of a cemetery for Susitna council residents as there is no cemetery in the vast council area and the Talkeetna cemetery is filling up.

Other ideas submitted to the committee were the purchase of administrative equipment like a laptop computer and shelves for the council and building a bike path between the Spur Road and Cubbies. With the recent wind storm in mind that knocked out power to a lot of people for days, the need for emergency planning and training sessions became apparent and made it also into pool of suggestions.

The grant expenditure committee will hold another meeting to solicit ideas from the public on November 18 at the Sheep Creek Lodge. This date also marks the deadline for suggestions that should include an idea description with a rough budget outline. The committee will prepare a report to the Susitna Community Council for their regular December meeting. The council will then decide on which projects will go forward.
