Talkeetna Community Council discusses wetlands, Comsat quarry, A Street trail

At their regularly scheduled meeting Monday night, the Talkeetna Community Council resolved to write multiple letters on behalf of community interests.

Recently, the Mat-Su Borough Assembly voted to cease working on a nearly complete wetland mitigation process.  This week, Mayor Vern Halter vetoed the resolution, sending it back to the Assembly for further review.  The Talkeetna Community Council voted to write a letter of support for the veto and for continuing with the public process.

During 2020, the contract between the Department of Natural Resources and Psenak Construction to extract rock out of a quarry near Christiansen Lake, caused a multitude of problems.  Residents have complained of excessive noise, dust, blasting without notice and environmental protection violations.  The contract expired on 12/31/2020 prompting a reclamation process. The Community Council agreed to write a letter to DNR asking for a copy of the final reclamation report and requesting that the Council be informed of any further contracts planned for the quarry.

The Council also agreed to write a letter to the Mat-Su Borough supporting a Pedestrian Trail on the A Street right-of-way, connecting the west end of Main Street to First Street by the river.

The Talkeetna Community Council meets monthly and the next regularly scheduled meeting will be held via Zoom on February 1st.
