At this month’s meeting, the Talkeetna Community Council voted to write a letter to the Mat-Su Borough Platting Board expressing concerns over the development of the Redstone Subdivision. The proposed subdivision is off of Beaver Road near Saddlenotch Street and Cabin Spike Avenue.
Council members and others present at the meeting expressed a number of concerns regarding the density of the subdivision, especially since it lies in a flood zone. Also discussed were the difficulty of installing wells and septic on each lot, given their small size, road access, and fire service access.
Other Borough issues were also discussed at the meeting, including the Road Service Area. The Council was told that equipment and tools for road improvement have been delayed by more than a year due to purchase order errors, and that the Alaska Railroad and Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge will be approached in the near future to contribute to improvements to Woodpecker Rd. Additionally, the condition of Yoder Road remains a high priority for the Road Service Area.
Borough Assembly Member Vern Halter attended the meeting and gave several updates for the Northern Valley. Halter says that the Borough has received $2.5 million in river management funding, and that he will attempt to secure some of that money for repair of Yoder Road. He says that progress has slowed regarding FEMA funding for the 2012 flood, and recommended that the community remain vocal regarding the recovery. Additionally, Assembly Member Halter says that a pedestrian tunnel under the Parks Highway has been funded. The tunnel is part of the state road improvement plan, and is intended to help Susitna Valley High School students cross the highway safely.
Also discussed was the proposed rate increase for the Talkeetna Sewer and Water district. After speaking with the Council, Halter said he was considering trying to delay the ordinance. On Tuesday, at the Borough Assembly meeting, he did so by preventing the ordinance from being introduced for a public hearing and Assembly vote.
The Council’s final decision of the evening was to move the September meeting from September second, Labor Day, to September ninth.
