Talkeetna Council meets with full agenda

The Talkeetna Community Council took action on several items Tuesday night at their monthly meeting.

The meeting was held a week earlier than normal to compensate for the Labor Day weekend.

A small crowd was present to hear the 2 candidates for Borough Assemby seat 7, Vern Halter and Doyle Holmes, give their views on Borough issues and why they are running for the seat.

The council had a number of items on the agenda to cover including discussion on a downtown Neighborhood Watch, the Riverfront Management Plan, nominations for council seats, a few state agency requests for input and a question on the open meetings act and vetting of communications by email.

The Community Council has formed a downtown park committee to work on a Neighborhood Watch program. The committee will not deal with user issues at the Village Park. Discussion ensued on a possibility of 2 separate committees or the possibility that a new committee member on the parks advisory committee would undertake projects in the park needing to be accomplished. There will be a committee meeting of the Neighborhood Watch on September 23^rd at 6 pm. A representative from the Borough and a state trooper will be present.

As one of the final actions of the evening, the Council board voted to send a letter to the Alaska DEC asking them to deny the recent application from the Alaska Railroad to spray herbicides on the tracks between Seward and Indian. The vote was not unanimous. Jok Bonderant  went on record to say he was in favor of the safe use of herbicides to rid the railroad tracks of weeds that harm rail safety.

A special council nominations meeting will be held on September 14^th in the Village Park at 7 p.m. as part of the start to promote safe, family events in the Park.
