Talkeetna Cronies top softball tourney Sunday

The annual one pitch softball tournament in Talkeetna this past weekend brought in dozens, if not hundreds, of Alaskans to watch and play ball. Thirteen teams participated in the tournament.

The top team of the tournament, for the first time in history, was the Talkeetna Cronies.  The Cronies took first place, second place went to Team Yao, a co-ed team from Anchorage, and Greg Pearson’s Brew Crew took third.  Janus Leo, of the Cronies, was declared the tourney MVP.

Saturday was not the best day for softball.  The field, at one point, turned into a mud pit.  The teams played into the evening in the mud and rain. Tournament play continued on Sunday with no precipitation, culminating with the championship game.

There were no reports of disorderly conduct and other behavior that turned last year’s Moose Dropping Festival weekend sour.  People that watched the tournament said the crowd attending was smaller than normal, most likely due to the cancelled festival.

Rumor has it that Ron Garrett, pitcher-extraordinaire for the Cronies, has retired from tourney play.  He said he wanted to go out in style on top.
