Brian Chavez, 27, of Talkeetna was arrested Wednesday night at his parents’ residence on Leila Lane in Talkeetna, according to Alaska State Troopers. Chavez was contacted by State Troopers because of an active warrant for Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the Second Degree. He is accused of molesting a fifteen-year-old girl in January of 2012, which is a class B felony carrying a punishment of up to ten years in prison. The warrant for his arrest was issued this February.
Chavez was previously arrested by U.S. Marshals on June 21st in Sparks, Nevada for the same warrant, but was released after posting $5000 bail. According to Assistant District Attorney Brittany Dunlop, the warrant also included a bail provision for a third-party custodian, which is a somewhat unique Alaskan requirement. The Nevada court did not name a custodian, and Dunlop says that because all of the provisions of the bail were not met that he was arrested again by Alaska State Troopers. Chavez was arraigned at 11:00am on Thursday in the Palmer Superior Court.
