After 100 years in service, the Talkeetna Railroad Bridge will be getting much needed repairs. This includes the Trainman’s Walk, an access path to the community of Chase.
Representatives from Alaska Railroad were on hand at the most recent Talkeetna Community Council meeting to discuss the upcoming construction project.
Alaska Railroad Project Manager Tyler Tubbs says that the bridge needs to be safe for train traffic. Tubbs says train traffic will continue during the construction with only temporary closures as needed. He also says emergency access will be maintained throughout construction.
The Trainman’s Walk will remain 47 inches wide at the urging of Chase residents. Residents say a larger walkway would encourage larger and faster ATVs that are not appropriate for the trails in the Chase area. The updates will also include an eight-inch kicker plate to protect the equipment from snowmachine skis going through the rail.
Closures will be posted with at least 48 hours notice at the library, post office, online, and on the north and south approaches. The bridge construction is expected to begin in mid-July. The Trainman’s Walk will not be repaired until after moose hunting season is finished.
