The Talkeetna Ranger Station has a new name.  President Obama has signed the Denali National Park Improvement Act, which officially renames the Park Service building to the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station in honor of the Athabascan climber who was the first person to set foot on the summit of Denali in 1913.  Preparations for the name change are underway at the ranger station, and a new sign could be ready by next spring.

The Act also approves a land exchange between the National Park Service and Doyon Limited for the construction of a small hydroelectric project and the permitting of a natural gas pipeline along the Parks Highway inside the Park.

The legislation was strongly supported by Congressman Don Young and Senator Lisa Murkowski.
