The Mat-Su Borough Assembly approved a contract to perform a condition assessment on Talkeetna’s water distribution system. The assessment will help evaluate the current status of the system, the useful life of it, and how much funding might be needed to support it in the future.
Talkeetna’s water system serves about 200 customers with its two wells, according to Mat-Su Borough’s Talkeetna Utilities and Facilities Operational Supervisor Amanda Fleming.
The Borough contracted Stephl Engineering to check the water system for around a quarter of a million dollars. This includes collecting and analyzing soil samples for corrosivity, evaluating existing pipe conditions, identifying leaks and damaged equipment, and estimating the remaining useful life of the system.
Work is expected to happen Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. The project is expected to be complete by September 15, 2025.
