Talkeetna's First Snow: Oct. 24th

Snow has begun to fall in the Upper Valley, although it is coming later than usual.  According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, the average date for the first measurable snow is October 14th.  While full year-to-year data was not available at airtime, this year’s first snow on October 24th is definitely one of the latest dates in recent years.

According to an interview last week with forecaster Michael Kutz, a mass of warm water off the Gulf of Alaska kept winter at bay for a couple of extra weeks, but now that the snow and colder temperatures have arrived, a more typical winter pattern is likely to continue.
