Temporary repairs to the Talkeetna revetment are nearing completion, according to Mat-Su Borough Manager Mike Brown.
Brown says the large rock, also known as riprap, has been placed in the area where high water caused rapid erosion in late August and early September. He says no more riprap is expected to be hauled down Main Street, and most of the heavy equipment will be leaving, soon.
There is still some work to be done. Brown says the next step is to place topsoil and seed on the repaired revetment.
On Monday, Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a disaster emergency for Downtown Talkeetna. That opens up the possibility of the borough being reimbursed for up to $750,000 of the cost of the temporary repair.
Going forward, the borough plans to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a more permanent solution to Talkeetna’s erosion concerns.
