The Talkeetna River near Downtown has been at near-flood stage for all of June thus far

Even a casual observation of river levels near the end of Talkeetna’s Main Street will reveal that the water is running high and fast.  High levels of erosion near Downtown prompted the Mat-Su Borough to place 500 cubic yards of rock to help shore up the revetment designed to keep the river channel from encroaching into town earlier this month.

River levels are expected to remain high into the weekend.  According to measurements from the Alaska Pacific River Forecast Center, the Talkeetna River has crested at near flood stage every day this month.  Normal stage for the river is less than ten feet of water.  Near-flood or Action Stage is from ten to twelve feet.  As of Thursday afternoon, the Talkeetna is expected to reach more than eleven feet on Saturday.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Talkeetna River near where it meets the Susitna and Chulitna, was the only gauge in the state measuring near flood stage.
