Final touches on the Trainman’s Walkway attached to the Talkeetna Railroad Bridge will be completed next week. Work began on both the bridge and the walkway earlier this year.
According to Alaska Railroad External Affairs Director Meghan Clemens, the Talkeetna Railroad Bridge received a much-needed update this past Summer after 100 years in service.
Alaska Railroad staff asked Chase community members for input on Trainman’s Walk before construction. The path is the main access connecting Chase and Talkeetna and has been in operation since the 1970s. Community members wanted the walk to remain narrower to keep larger and faster ATVs from accessing the remote area.
Railroad staff waited until after moose hunting season to begin periodic closures of the walkway. After more than two months of work, Clemens says the Trainman’s Walk will be complete by the end of next week.
