Trapper Creek Council Boundary to be Discussed

The Trapper Creek Community Council wants to give the community ample opportunity to comment on enlarging the council boundaries. But illnesses have led to board members stepping down. That has stalled the process while the board reconfigures itself. 

Earlier this year, Mat-Su Borough Planner Julie Spackman attended a Council meeting to explain the process to change the boundaries. Following that meeting, the Council developed a rough outline of where the new boundaries might be. And the Borough created a map for the Council to share with the community. 

The Council may request addresses for those members currently in the Council area and those who might be included if the new boundaries are accepted. This would further give members, both current and potential, another avenue to get the information and provide comment. 

Spackman says the role of community councils is to speak for the members that live in the area. There is no taxation nor are there political ties related to the councils. The Councils have no bearing on any local, State, or Federal elections. The groups are a way to provide community members a collective voice for their area. 

Once the community finalizes the boundary change proposal, the Planning Department will assist by bringing it forward to the Assembly for approval. Spackman says the process will take two months for it to be introduced and then voted on by the Assembly. 

The boundary issue will be discussed at the next Trapper Creek Community Council meeting on Thursday, August 15. Chair Jay Kresge says the group will also likely focus on filling the vacant Treasurer position this month. All community members are welcome to attend the meeting.
