Trapper Creek council meets

The Trapper Creek Community Council will soon have a new Board of Directors.  The Board and residents held a meet and greet event before their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Thursday evening.

The election results will be known late Thursday, April 29^th.

The meeting Thursday was lively and argumentative as community members and the Board discussed a number of items on the agenda.

It was the third item of business brought the most heat to the meeting.  Fred Agree proposed that the Chulitna River Bridge be named the Mary Carey Memorial Bridge in honor of the pioneering woman who settled in the area in the 60s.    Heated debate followed as people discussed how much money a legislative move of that sort would cost taxpayers.  Others didn’t necessarily like the idea of renaming the bridge while others were in full support of the measure.  The idea was tabled and may arise again at next month’s meeting.

In other business, Board member Rick Leo gave a very brief update on the proposed Susitna Hydro project.  He said that no action was necessary now, but that the community should be aware that a dam bigger than the Hoover Dam is proposed in the upper reaches of the Susitna River.  He stated that both Talkeetna and Chase Community Councils had written letters asking legislators to delay approving the proposal until more is known about the possible detrimental effects of damming the Susitna River.

Nancy Stuer, resident of milepost 89,  gave a short synopsis of an incident that happened to her dog late last year and pleaded with the community to fill out Borough animal complaint forms instead of shooting dogs.  Last year, a truck pulled into her yard and several dogs jumped and killed HER dog.  That set her on a pathway to find a solution to a problem she said had been occurring for several years. She asked the community to fill out forms that are sent to the Animal control office in Palmer instead of taking matters into their own hands.

The council discussed the current projects under the revenue sharing accounts.  Updates will be given again at their May meeting as progress is made on the four projects.

extended version – The revenue sharing projects were discussed.  Paul Thomas said thanked the great number of people that all assisted with the Hassan Hut project.  A new roof is up as well as other repairs.  A new, larger stage for the pavilion was approved.  There has been no progress on the shed project.  An update on the sign project was given.  It appears to have support from DOT.  The application for an encroachment permit still needs to be filed.  The sign committee has a design that will go out for bid.
