After years of failed efforts to get money for the much-needed roof replacement at the Trapper Creek Elementary School, the tables have turned. A line item of $100,000 for a new roof has survived Governor Sean Parnell’s red veto pen that struck through the state budget. The roof at the Trapper Creek Elementary School is leaking in several places and the Borough sinks around $15,000 annually into repairs.
A school bond proposition that included money for the roof replacement went before voters last year, but failed.
Mat-Su Borough’s project manager Jeff Walden said that he expects the state’s money to become available in October. Although the money has been allocated now, work to replace the roof will not begin until next summer. Walden explained the timeline: The project will be advertised for construction this winter, and once school is out for summer next year, the replacement work is slated to commence. The roof in its entirety will not be replaced. The Borough plans to install a proper transition between the roof, and the flat roof extension to make it watertight.
Walden said that there was $20,000 left from a previous grant and combined with the state’s money, the project can be completed.
