Trapper Creek to have a Fast-Charging Station for Electric Vehicles

Three Bears in Trapper Creek will soon be a Fast-Charging Station for electric vehicles traveling the Parks Highway.

The Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) recently awarded nearly one million dollars to support the installation of twelve Direct-Current Fast Chargers and eleven Level-2 Electric Vehicle (EV) Chargers.  The goal of AEA is to develop electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Alaska, which is critical to encouraging EV adoption. 

The charging route will run from Fairbanks to Homer, with additional charging stations in Healy, Cantwell, Chugiak, Anchorage, Cooper Landing, Soldotna and Seward.

Earlier this spring, AEA solicited requests for the funds and reviewed 24 applications before selecting the 9 sites.  Alaska Energy Authority and the host sites will work together as partners, each providing funds for the charging stations.

The federally suggested distance between charging stations is 50 miles, but that can be difficult in Alaska.  The starting route has four sections that are roughly 100 miles apart, with the longest stretch occurring between Healy and Fairbanks.

AEA is hoping the EV charging stations will encourage other hosts to develop charging stations along the route.  The goal is to have the initial corridor fully operational by summer of 2022.
