Troopers: Counterfeit currency used in Northern Valley transaction

The Alaska State Troopers are asking for information on a counterfeit bill used at a local business last Friday.

According to Troopers, just before noon on April 20^th, a male with a “scruffy” beard wearing a black hoodie used a counterfeit $50 bill at Subway near the intersection of the Parks Highway and the Talkeetna Spur Road. Troopers ask anyone with information regarding the incident to contact CrimeStoppers at 745-3333 or Trooper dispatch at 352-5401.

Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters says currency fraud is handled federally, but theft of service is a state crime.

This follows a report by the Anchorage Police Department last month that described an increase in circulation of counterfeit bills. APD says some counterfeit bills seen by officers have Chinese or Turkish writing on them, and some say “For Motion Picture Use Only.” Anchorage Police also provided a link to a federal document called “Know Your Money,” which describes ways to identify counterfeit currency.
