Tuesday is borough election day

Tuesday is election day for the Mat-Su Borough and Talkeetna Community Council, Inc.

The borough ballot includes races for mayor, multiple borough assembly seats, and three ballot questions.

In the mayoral race, incumbent Vern Halter is being challenged by Bruce Walden.

There are three candidates vying for Assembly District 7’s seat, which represents the Northern Valley south to Meadow Lakes. There is no incumbent, as Randall Kowalke, who currently holds the seat, is not running for re-election. The three candidates are Dan Dees, Walter Kloepfer, and Tam Boeve.

Voters will also be asked to weigh in on three ballot questions. The first is an advisory vote asking whether the borough should move toward acquiring police powers. Proposition 2 is a road bond package totaling around $24 million. The third proposition would change the date of future borough elections. If approved, the ballot measure would move the election from the first week in October to the same date as state and federal elections.

The Talkeetna Community Council election is also on Tuesday. There are six candidates on the ballot for four seats, as well as two official write-in candidates. The candidates on the ballot are Ali Lee, the only incumbent running, Drew Haag, Sarah Russell, Joe McAneney, Walter Kloepfer, and Stephanie Spone. The two official write-in candidates are Lora and David Nelson.

Polling locations for the borough election are the Talkeetna Public Library, the Upper Susitna Senior and Civic Center, the Trapper Creek public library, and the Willow Community Center. More information, including sample ballots and the election brochure, are available at the borough website.
