Unofficial borough election results
Tuesday was Election Day in the Mat-Su Borough, and the assembly seat that represents the Northern Valley was on the ballot, as well as the borough mayor and a ballot proposition for a sixty-million dollar road bond package.
For the District 7 assembly seat, early voting and Election Day results show challenger Ron Bernier with a wide lead over incumbent Tam Boeve. With all precincts reporting, Bernier had 1,192 votes to Boeve’s 737.
Reached by phone on Wednesday, Bernier says that, even though he lives closer to the Core Area, he intends to listen to the issues facing the Northern Valley.
Bernier said, “I want everybody in District 7 to give me a call, personally, if they have some issues. I have the ear of the whole district, not just a few select people or communities, by any means.”
In the three-way race for borough mayor, current Palmer Mayor Edna DeVries ended Tuesday with just under fifty-eight percent of the vote. Former Deputy-Mayor Matthew Beck took twenty-seven percent of the vote, and former Wasilla Mayor Bert Cottle took about fifteen percent. Cottle had temporarily suspended his campaign to undergo chemotherapy before resuming it in late October.
The road bond proposal ended Tuesday with 8,363 yes votes to 4,810 no votes.
In other assembly districts, incumbent Jesse Sumner appears poised to retain his seat on the Assembly for District 3. In District 1, George McKee was not eligible to run due to term limits, but his wife, Dolores, came out of Tuesday with a substantial lead.
On the school board side of the ballot, incumbent Thomas Bergey is well on his way to retaining his seat. There was no incumbent in the District 4 race, where Jubilee Underwood holds a significant lead over Jennifer Walther.
Turnout between early voting and Election Day was fifteen percent borough-wide. Absentee ballots are not accounted for in that percentage.
Current counts reflect ballots cast on Tuesday as well as early voting, but not absentee ballots. All results remain unofficial until certified by the assembly. That certification is scheduled for November 16th.
