Unofficial Election Day results from the Mat-Su Borough election are now available. According to a press release from the borough, more than 1500 absentee and 350 questioned ballots were issued. Votes from those ballots have yet to be counted, and will go through a canvassing process.
The lone item on Northern Valley ballots was approval of bonds for transportation projects. On Election Day ballots borough-wide, votes in favor of the bond package had approximately a two-to-one lead over votes against it.
Elsewhere in the borough, seats on the Mat-Su Borough Assembly and Mat-Su Borough School Board were on the ballot. In District 4, incumbent Rob Yundt ran unopposed. In District 5, challenger Bill Gamble leads incumbent Mokie Tew with a little over fifty-eight percent of the votes counted so far.
District 6 had a four-way race for the Borough Assembly. Incumbent Dmitri Fonov (FOE-nov), holds a large lead with more than double votes of any of his challengers.
Two school board seats were on this year’s ballot. The school board election came days after multiple protests by students and a vote of no confidence by the Mat-Su Education Association. Incumbent candidates both hold leads after Election Day counts. In District 3, Kathy McCollum leads challenger Sydney Zuyus (ZY-us) by nearly 500 votes. In District 6, incumbent Ole (OH-lee) Larson leads challenger Dianne Shibe by about 300 votes.
The next step in the counting process will be verifying counts that were called in from precincts on Tuesday and reviewing ballot accountability reports. Counting of absentee and questioned ballots will follow. All ballots will eventually be hand-counted, due to a recent change in borough code.
Certification of the 2023 Mat-Su Borough Election is scheduled for November 21st.
