Upper Valley Road Contracts Up For Renewal

Trapper Creek and Caswell Lakes areas are scheduled for road contract renewals this spring. Talkeetna and Willow areas signed new road contracts just last year. They were for one year with two possible one-year extensions. The contractor for those two areas chose not to renew.

Mat-Su Borough Operations and Maintenance Division Manager Chad Fry says the contractor did not give a reason for not renewing. Fry says nine Borough road contracts will be going out for bid by the end of February, four of them in the Upper Valley.

According to Fry, the applicants can submit proposals with options in the contract for cost saving measures, especially offering options for snow berms. For some contractors in the last round of bids, there was no difference in cost for leaving the snow berm or clearing it completely.

Contracts will vary depending on what’s needed in each area. There are variances in items like amounts of salt and sand, striping, and vegetation. Fry says the request for bids will be out for 30 days in each area and they expect all contracts to be in place by the next fiscal year, which starts July 1st.
