US Senators support Kantishna hydro project

A small hydro project proposed to power the Kantishna Roadhouse garnered support from U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich. The Senators introduced legislation that would give the green light to the construction of the hydro plant inside the non-wilderness part of Denali National Park.It takes an Act of Congress to allow the Park Service to issue a special use permit for the construction and to swap ten acres of Doyon-owned land with the National Park Service.

Doyon Limited owns the Kantishna Roadhouse, located about 100 miles within Denali National Park. The lodge currently generates its own power with a generator. The micro hydro project would consist of a 50-Watt power plant, a small impoundment dam and a pipeline. Eureka Creek is not a fish bearing stream and the Park Service is in support of the project.
