Varsity Rams play on home ice tonight

Tonight, Talkeetna hockey fans will have the last chance to see the Susitna Valley Rams hockey team play on their home ice as the 2011 hockey season winds down. Most of the hockey team will be graduating this coming spring.

Coach Jack MacDonald said that the majority of his players, including his goalie, are seniors and that after their graduation, there will only be four players left. That’s not enough for a competitive varsity team.

MacDonald said there is a big generation gap between his current team and upcoming players who are not even in high school yet.
He said he’s sad to see this era come to an end as he has coached the players on the varsity team for eight years. After this season, he will go on teaching youth hockey and raise a new generation of competitive hockey players starting with forming a club team with the seventh and eighth graders.
The Su Valley Rams lost last Thursday’s home game against Tri-Valley, one to zero. The Rams then traveled to Glennallen and lost both

games on Friday and Saturday, 5-8 and 3-6, respectively. Corey Ambrose registered his second hat trick of the season in the first loss at Glennallen.
Tonight, the Su Valley Rams are going to play Kenny Lake at home. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Jack P. MacDonald ice rink.
On Friday and Saturday, the team is scheduled to travel to Fairbanks to play Monroe Catholic. The Rams are still looking for their first conference win of the season. Susitna Valley will host Regionals at the Brett Arena in Wasilla on Friday, February 4th.
