VFW post closes for the winter

TALKEETNA— The Talkeetna VFW post has closed its doors for the winter. VFW chaplain Clarence Wells and commander Gary Stone confirmed that the VFW bar and canteen is out of business — at least for the time being.Wells said financial reasons forced the VFW to shut down for the winter. He said that the economy in general and the cancellation of this summer’s Moose Dropping Festival in particular, led to the financial demise of the post. In the past, the Talkeetna Historical Society shared money made during the Moose Dropping Festival with the VFW. Wells said it was usually enough money to keep the VFW open throughout the winter.

Stone added that there are also less actively involved veterans in Talkeetna to keep the post going. Stone said that a meeting of the VFW membership is scheduled for November 12.

For Veteran’s Day on November 11, the VFW is going to be open to the public for a ceremony honoring the veterans beginning at 11 a.m., and followed by a soup and bread social.
