The deadline is fast-approaching to register for the August 16th primary and special elections.
Most Alaskans won’t have to do anything in order to make sure they are eligible to vote next month. That’s because Permanent Fund Dividend applications also serve as voter registration unless one chooses to opt out of registering.
Unlike the special election primary for U.S. House earlier this year, the August election will be in-person. Those wishing to vote absentee by mail must request a ballot from the Alaska Division of Elections.
The primary side of the ballot (pdf) for Northern Valley residents will include choices for the U.S. Senate, Governor and Lieutenant Governor, House District 30, and Senate District O. Three candidates, Joy Mindiola, Doyle Holmes, and incumbent Kevin McCabe are running for House Seat 30. In Senate District O, incumbent Mike Shower is being challenged by Doug Massie.
The primary election ballot will also have choices for candidates running for the full U.S. House term beginning next January. The primary will follow Alaska’s new system of the top four candidates for each office advancing to the general election.
The special election ballot for the remainder of Congressman Don Young’s term is on the back side of the primary ballot. This will be Alaska’s first time using a ranked-choice system as approved by voters in 2020. Three candidates, Sarah Palin, Nick Begich, and Mary Peltola are vying for Alaska’s only seat in the House until the full term begins next year. All three are also running in the primary.
More information, including links to register online to vote and the sample ballot for House District 30 are posted at KTNA.org.
