The Alaska State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, or DOT, says they will initiate a study at the intersection of the Talkeetna Spur Road and the Parks Highway. The Talkeetna Community Council requested the DOT study the area because of crashes and speeding traffic near the intersection.
The Talkeetna and Susitna Community Councils drafted letters to support some sort of action at the intersection. The DOT notes an increase in traffic counts and a number of crashes at the intersection.
The DOT cited concern for all users, including local and through drivers, as well as students, pedestrians, and non-motorized users in the area. Funding has not yet been allocated for the project. In addition, the DOT is unsure what kind of study will be conducted to best capture the information needed.
Once funding has been allocated and a study conducted, the DOT looks to local community organizations to help implement the recommendations. The DOT indicates they will be in contact with the Community Councils as the project moves forward.
