Weather update noon – Talkeetna, Trapper Creek and the Sunshine area received a dose of heavy and wet snow overnight. At the Talkeetna airport, the flight service measured four and a half inches of snowfall since last night. Skwentna was hardest hit, with the Skwentna airport reporting 32 inches of new snow as of 11 am . Residents in Trapper Creek reported 8″ and Petersville Road residents reported about 17″ of new snow. School buses had problems getting to Trapper Creek Elementary School and eight kids didn’t make it to school this morning.
As of 11 am, troopers have not received any accident reports.
The state DOT and the borough’s road crews currently plowing the Spur Road and highway. North towards Chulitna, the DOT reports about a foot of snow. The DOT has called in off-duty equipment operators to plow the roads. Further south, in Palmer, strong winds and rain knocked out power to three schools.
The National Weather Service said there are another six to eight inches of snowfall expected for tonight.
