Talkeetna Council to move ahead on Riverfront Plan

The Talkeetna Community Council meeting Monday night gave residents a chance to listen to the meeting without leaving their homes.  Last month, the council decided to hold a meeting at Whole Wheat Radio, about 7 miles from their regular meeting place.  The venue gave the council the opportunity to allow residents to listen to the meeting online on their computers from home.

Borough manager John Duffy was on the list as a person to be heard.  He spoke about a number of issues happening Borough-wide that might affect Talkeetna residents.  He said recycling containers will be placed at all transfer stations soon and added that money was in the borough coffers to help Talkeetna to get a public water source.

The council board voted unanimously to ask the Borough to start working on implementation of the Riverfront Management Plan. The plan was completed in 2004, but has never been acted on. There was discussion on signage at the end of Main Street and other issues surrounding the riverfront area and main street.  There was some question as to whether the Borough would actually implement the plan, but chair Billy Fitzgerald said he wanted to begin the process.

The council also voted to send a letter to the platting commission approving the idea of using the recently cleared site at milepost 5 for a large buried water tank and future fire station.  Fire Chief Ken Farina was on hand to answer questions on the tree cutting that occurred at milepost 5 of the Talkeetna Spur Road this spring.

One issue on next month’s agenda could be tackling  overflights  around Talkeetna and flight patterns to assist in noise reduction for residents.  The council asked that fire service area reports be added to the council’s monthly agenda.
