Wet weather assists in fire control
by Sue Deyoe ~ June 15th, 2010
Wet and cooler weather over the past several days across the Mat Su and Susitna Valleys helped with fire danger. Matt Weaver, spokesperson for Alaska Division of Forestry says that fire danger across the Mat Su Borough is now moderate and while cooler weather exists, it is the time to do pruning and defensible space measures that have not been possible due to fire danger.
Weaver says the Eklutna fire is now in monitor status and has hot spots high in the alpine tundra. He says periodically someone will hike up and take a look at the fire and overflights will help forestry officials keep an eye on the fire. The trails there are open again. Weaver says the hotspots might emit smoke occasionally.
