The Susitna Valley Rams are back from weekend road trips

by KTNA Staff ~ January 31st, 2011

Susitna Valley’s varsity sports teams completed a busy weekend on Saturday. The hockey team traveled to Fairbanks to play Monroe Catholic twice, and the basketball teams traveled to Nikolaevsk for three games apiece.
The hockey team suffered two disappointing losses, 1-4 on Friday night, and 1-5 on Saturday. According to coach…Jack Macdonald, penalties continue to be the Rams’ undoing. The Rams have now completed their regular season, and are poised to host the regional tournament this Friday at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena. Susitna Valley can advance to the State tournament with a win, but a loss would bring their season to a close. Furthermore, with the majority of the team prepared to graduate this spring, and the varsity program likely to need a hiatus of several years to rebuild its roster, this weekend could be the final weekend of Ram hockey for many years.

Both the Susitna Valley Rams basketball teams won two of the three games that they played, and secured second place trophies for their efforts. On Thursday, the Lady Rams defeated Valley Christian 45-9 to improve their record to 7 and 0. On the tournament’s second day, the Rams lost 42-44 to Aniak on a three point shot drained with two seconds left by Aniak’s Trisha Morgan. Susitna Valley rebounded with a 47-28 win over the host Nikolaevsk Warriors on Saturday that earned the Rams a second place finish. Kat Wollett, Bailey Stevenson and Sierra Pedersen were voted on to the All Tournament Team. Stevenson led the Rams balanced attack with 30 points in three games.

The Gentlemen Rams opened tournament play with a 56-41 victory over Valley Christian. Mitch Drover led all scorers with 17 points. Stone Krueger added 13 and Dylan Figley 12. Susitna Valley then lost to an explosive Aniak team 47-65. Drover led Rams’ scorers once again with 15 points. Elias Curtis contributed 12 and Dylan Figley 11. On Saturday the Rams grabbed second place with a 61-49 win over Nikolaevsk. Mitch Drover topped all scorers with 23 points, Elias Curtis picked up 14 and Dylan Figley chipped in with 13. Drover and Figley were voted to the All Tournament Team. Aniak won both the girls and boys brackets at the Nikolaevsk Warrior Rumble.

The Susitna Valley Rams will play three games apiece at this weekend’s Nenana Invitational Tournament, and then host their own Invitational for three days starting on Thursday, February 10th.
