By Sondra Porter–Six local non-profit organizations have just been awarded healthy community grants by the Jessica Stevens Community Foundation. The 2011 award winners include Sunshine Transit Coalition, Trapper Creek Pre-School, Upper Susitna Youth Conservation Corp, Talkeetna Build-a-Plane Project, Sunshine Station Childcare Center, and Talkeetna Elementary PTA.
This represents the third consecutive year that the JSC Foundation has divided $5000 among Upper Susitna non-profits. Sunshine Transit, Upper Susitna Youth Corp, Build a Plane and Talkeetna PTA are receiving funding for a second year.
Community members from northern Susitna Valley communities have tried to take on the spirit of Jessica Stevens as they established the Foundation named in her memory. Since its founding in 2008, the JSCF advisory board continues to raise funds to create an endowment which can perpetually aid local nonprofit groups in their efforts to build healthy communities in and around Trapper Creek and Talkeetna.
The Jessica Stevens Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation.
