For the last several days, residents in east Talkeetna have watched dump trucks filled with tree branches and soil, called overburden, headed to the Beaver Road gravel pit.
The loads are coming from the Warm Storage Facility located at the corner of Comsat Road and the Talkeetna Spur Road. The building is practically invisible from the Spur Road, but residents can see the progress of the building from Comsat Road.
Construction began on the building this past fall. The concrete slab-on-grade was poured a couple of weeks ago. The structural steel for the building shell is ready to be installed. Borough officials expect the building shell will be complete by the end of this week. John Harris has turned over management of the project to Robert Scott, who is also the construction manager in charge of the Su Valley high school project.
Overburden from the construction site will continue to be hauled this week.
The building, once completed, will house a steam truck for pipe thawing and trail maintenance equipment as well as providing a warm place to repair sewer facility parts. Substantial completion date is set for April 1st, however, Scott says work on the entire site might last through the end of May.
