Update- Sun. 6 pm. The Susitna River went out with a bang this morning. The Alaska Railroad has suspended all mainline services until the tracks just south of Curry and about 11 miles north of Talkeetna get repaired. KTNA news took a flight with Talkeetna Aero to survey damage. There are large chunks of ice along the tracks and river debris blocking the tracks. There appears to be only one area affected. The railroad has dealt with ice jams blocking the tracks in past years.
Railroad crews will be staging out of Talkeetna to work on the tracks. AK Railroad spokesman Tim Thompson say he can’t be sure if the Hurricane Train will run on Thursday, but they are hopeful it will only take a day or 2 to clear the debris.
The full story on the railroad and break up will be available tomorrow. (Monday)
