Bond issues to appear on October ballot

Bond issues occupied discussions at the area’s community council meetings and the Mat-Su assembly meeting this week.At Thursday night’s Susitna Community Council meeting, Mat-Su assemblyman Vern Halter updated the four attending council members on a school bond and a proposed road bond proposal.

According to Halter, the Mat-Su school district has forwarded recommendations to the borough for a $33.9 million maintenance package and  $9 million to improve sports facilities. Within the sports package is request for more than $800,000 including a hockey rink at Su Valley High and improvements to the running track and the ball court.

As far as road bonds go, the Mat-Su Assembly called for a special meeting on August 12 to hammer out details of which of the listed projects make sense to pursue.

Vern Halter requested at last Thursday’s Susitna Community Council meeting that Road Service Area representatives provide input before the August 12 meeting to identify borough road projects.

Responding to Talkeetna Community Council’s requests, he recommended paving B Street instead of an access road between Beaver and Comsat Road.

He also said he’d be against paving Susitna Landing Road as it is mostly a road used by recreationalists. He recommends to re-allocate money for improvements of the Caswell Lakes Road Service Area, but needs local input as to which roads should be paved.

The bond issues will go before the voters on October 5.
