The new recycling center in Wasilla is now open. The non-profit, Valley Community for Recycling Solutions, moved into the new building mid December. There were a few equipment snafus that didn’t allow them to open at the time they intended, but the building is now open and the official opening is this Thursday at 3 p.m.
Past valley senator Lyda Green is one of the guest speakers. Green was one of those instrumental in obtaining the funding for the 6 point 5 million dollar building.
The recycling goal is 50 tons, or 25 percent of the waste stream going into the landfill to be diverted to recycling. At some point, VCRS hopes to start accepting glass recycling and perform glass crushing in the recycling center.
The Mat Su Borough owns the 23,500 square-foot building and the land it sits on. VCRS manages and operates the center under a 20 year agreement.
