Open Air Market offers Artisans a wider audience

Last Saturday, May 19th, saw the launch of the Artisans Open Air Market. The all-Alaskan market, which runs Saturday, through Monday, is located outside the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar.   An array of artistic talents are on display every Saturday, Sunday and Monday until September.  This year there are approximately 15 booths. Carving, photography, gold, paintings, stain glass, jewelry, and woodworks. The market has continued to grow.

For the last several years the Market has had a more selective process for artists. The market reduced the number of booths and asked artisans to apply, and are reviewed and accepted by a jury.  Dora Miller says that each vendor has become more professional; they give thought to the originality of their art, displays, presentation, and booth. Applications are then reviewed by a jury and either accepted or denied.  Made in Alaska and Silver Hand permits are encouraged, but not mandatory.

Miller says the market allows people to chat with the artists, hear their stories, and in some cases,  watch their creations come to life right there.
