The borough Assembly rejected an agreement that would increase borough responsibility for maintaining area roads that were previously maintained by the state.
Based on a 2004 agreement, the state planned to assume responsibility for the maintenance of Seward Meridian Road, and in return the Borough was going to assume responsibility for a number of other area roads. Locally, the Talkeetna Road Service Area, or RSA, would have been required to assume maintenance of Christiansen Lake Road, adding an estimated $8,000 annually to the RSA’s expenses.
Because the Assembly reneged on the agreement, a new agreement between the state and the borough will need to be arrived at. It seems likely that the swap will be redrawn, and state-maintained roads in the road service area containing Seward Meridian would likely be transferred to the Borough’s responsibility.
